To meet the increasing demand for communications services, new area codes are introduced in regions across Canada from time to time as a result of decisions by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission.
Alberta
New area code 368 will be introduced in the area served by area codes 403, 587, 780, and 825, beginning April 22, 2022.
What does this mean for you?
- Existing phone numbers will keep the same area code and will be not changed.
- New phone numbers will be assigned the new 368 area code as of April 22, 2022.
- Local calling areas will not change and will be the same for phone numbers with area codes 403, 587, 780, and 825 and the new area code 368.
- N11 service access codes such as emergency calls (911), directory assistance (411), repair (611) and relay service (711) will continue to be dialed using 3-digits.
New Brunswick
New area code 428 will be introduced in the area served by area code 506 beginning April 29, 2023.
10-digit dialing is also being introduced in the area served by area code 506. Starting on January 20, 2023, local calls made in the 506 area code must be dialed using the 3-digit area code and the 7-digit telephone number.
What does this mean for you?
- Existing phone numbers will keep the same area code and will be not changed.
- New phone numbers will be assigned the new 428 area code starting on April 29, 2023.
- Local calling areas will not change and will be the same for phone numbers with area code 506 and the new area code 428.
- 10-digit dialing started on January 13, 2022, and will be mandatory as of January 20, 2023.
- N11 service access codes such as emergency calls (911), directory assistance (411), repair (611) and relay service (711) will continue to be dialed using 3-digits.
Newfoundland and Labrador
New area code 879 will be introduced in the area served by area code 709, beginning May 20, 2022.
10-digit dialing is also being introduced in the area served by area code 709. Starting on February 11, 2022, local calls made in the 709 area code must be dialed using the 3-digit area code and the 7-digit telephone number.
What does this mean for you?
- Existing phone numbers will keep the same area code and will be not changed.
- New phone numbers will be assigned the new 879 area code as of May 20, 2022.
- Local calling areas will not change and will be the same for phone numbers with area code 709 and the new area code 879.
- 10-digit dialing started on February 11, 2022 and will be mandatory as of May 6, 2022.
- N11 service access codes such as emergency calls (911), directory assistance (411), repair (611) and relay service (711) will continue to be dialed using 3-digits.
Ontario
New area code 753 will be introduced in the area served by area codes 343 and 613, beginning March 26, 2022.
New area code 683 will be introduced in the area served by area codes 249 and 705, beginning June 18 2022.
What does this mean for you?
- Existing phone numbers will keep the same area code and will be not changed.
- New phone numbers will be assigned in 753, and 683 area codes as of this spring.
Quebec
The introduction of the new area code 354 to the area served by area codes 450 and 579, will begin October 22, 2022.
The introduction of the new area code 263 to the area served by area codes 438 and 514, will begin October 22, 2022.
The introduction of the new area code 468 to the area served by area codes 818 and 873, will begin October 22, 2022.
What does this mean for you?
- Existing phone numbers will keep the same area code and will be not changed.
- New phone numbers will be assigned in 263, 354 and 468 area codes as of October 22, 2022.
